WHAT IS TMJ
Jaw Pain Often Has a Dental Source
TMJ disorder, clinically known as TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder), affects the temporomandibular joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When the bite is off, the muscles are strained, or the joint is inflamed, the result can be chronic headaches, jaw pain, clicking, or stiffness, sometimes for years before the cause is identified.
Many dentists, including Dr. Williams, are now able to treat TMJ/TMD by realigning the bite and relaxing the jaw muscles. The approach is gentle and ongoing, focused on long-term relief.

WHEN TO LOOK INTO TMD
If Your Jaw Has Been Talking to You
Persistent jaw pain, clicking or popping when you chew, frequent headaches, or waking up with a sore face are all common signs of TMJ disorder (TMD). A quick exam will tell you whether your symptoms have a dental source, or whether something else is at play.
HOW IT WORKS
From First Symptom to Long-Term Relief
1
Initial Consultation
Dr. Williams listens to your symptoms — when they started, what makes them worse, how they affect your day — and reviews your medical and dental history.
2
Comprehensive Exam
We examine your jaw movement, bite alignment, facial muscles, and posture. Digital scans, photos, or X-rays may also be used to confirm the diagnosis.
3
Custom Treatment Plan
Treatment is designed around your specific case. It may include a custom night guard, jaw exercises, posture habits, or bite modification.
4
Follow-Up & Adjustments
TMD relief is rarely instant. We follow up to see how you're responding, adjust the plan as needed, and check in until symptoms are well managed.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU
Common Signs You May Have TMJ
TMJ disorder (also called TMD) shows up differently in different people, but a few patterns come up often. You may benefit from an exam if you regularly experience:
Jaw pain, stiffness, or fatigue
Clicking or popping when chewing or opening wide
Frequent headaches, especially in the morning
Tooth wear from grinding or clenching
Earaches without an ear infection
TMD can be tied to stress, jaw injury, arthritis, or bite misalignment. Often there's more than one cause, and the consultation helps us identify which factors are at play for you.
OUR APPROACH
TMJ Care, Not Quick Fixes
Diagnostic-First
We don't just hand out a night guard. Treatment for TMD starts with a thorough exam to understand what's actually causing your symptoms.
Multi-Modal Treatment
TMD rarely has one root cause. Plans combine appliances, exercises, and habit changes, whatever the case actually needs.
Long-Term Follow-Up
Real relief takes time. We check in over weeks or months until your symptoms are managed, not just at the first appointment.
