Dental Crowns Near You

A dental crown (or cap as it is commonly known) is a ceramic covering that restores a tooth to its original shape and size. A crown is intended to protect and strengthen a tooth that can not be repaired with a composite filling. There are several materials used to fabricate crowns with ceramic (tooth coloured) being the most popular. Ceramic crowns are durable and will last for many years if well cared for and maintained.

Crowns are recommended for several reasons, including:

  • To repair a broken or cracked tooth.
  • To enhance the aesthetics (appearance) of a tooth.
  • To strengthen a tooth that has suffered from extensive decay.
  • To strengthen a tooth that has an existing large and/or damaged filling.
  • To protect a tooth that has had root canal treatment.

A dental crown procedure involves two visits to the dentist. Your first visit involves a digital scan that will be used in the fabrication of your custom-made crown. In some cases, molds (or impressions) will be used to provide this information. While the tooth is numb the dentist will remove any decay or weakened areas of the tooth. The tooth is carefully prepared to fit the custom-made ceramic crown. Once this is complete a temporary crown will be placed which allows you to chew and function gently in the area. A dental laboratory receives the scan, or impressions, and proceeds with the fabrication of the ceramic crown.

At the second appointment, which occurs approximately 10 days later, the temporary crown is gently removed, the tooth is cleaned, and the new crown is placed. The dentist will carefully inspect the area to ensure the spacing and the fit are accurate. Instructions will be given on how to take care of your new custom-made crown.

Yes, teeth with crowns need extra love. Brush and floss them gently to keep them clean and healthy. Avoid biting hard things like ice or pens to prevent damage.

Dental crowns can be made of different materials, like metal, porcelain, or a mix of both. Porcelain crowns look like natural teeth and are the most common choice because they’re strong and blend in well.

If your crown feels loose or falls off, call your dentist immediately. Don’t try to fix it yourself because you could damage your tooth or crown. Your dentist will fix it or make you a new one if needed.

Dental crowns can turn yellow over time due to coffee, tea, or smoking. Poor oral hygiene can also cause staining. Regular brushing and avoiding staining foods and drinks can help keep your crown looking bright and white.
